Beyond Our Echo Chambers: A Braver Angels Inspired Political Exchange
The Beyond Our Echo Chambers Seminar served as my intellectual engagement over the past couple of months. The exchange consisted of two schools intended to represent polarizing sides of the political spectrum: Buckingham Browne & Nichols School and Sam Houston High School. We met with them six different times, each conversation following a specific progression.
The purpose was to have challenging conversations with people we may disagree with, not with the goal of arguing or changing one another’s opinions, but rather with the intention of understanding each other more deeply. Below is a more detailed explanation of each exchange.
Exchange 1: Setting Goals and Boundaries + Get to know each other
During our first exchange, I enjoyed getting to know the students from Sam Houston High School on a personal level and finding unexpected similarities in our interests, music, and hobbies. I was especially interested in hearing about the strong role religion and vocational education play in their community, which helped me better understand how environment can shape people’s perspectives and values.
Exchange 2: Item Exchange
During this exchange, each student shared an item that was personally meaningful to them and explained the story behind it. We then retold another student’s story from their perspective, which I think promoted empathy and a particular deeper understanding of each other’s experiences and identities.
Exchange 3: Challenging Conversations

This session pushed me to become more comfortable expressing my own opinions while listening openly to perspectives I do not usually encounter. Although I was initially nervous, the honesty and thoughtfulness of the conversation made it one of the most meaningful exchanges for me.
Exchange 4: Navigating Disagreement

The fishbowl discussion challenged me to remain respectful even during moments when I strongly disagreed with certain comments and perspectives. Despite the tension at times, I appreciated hearing the reasoning behind different viewpoints and began to better understand how religion and morality influence many people’s beliefs.
Exchange 5: Difficult but Valuable Discussions
This exchange was one of the most emotionally challenging, particularly during conversations about abortion and gun control. Although I often struggled to understand the opposing perspectives, the experience taught me the importance of engaging thoughtfully with people whose beliefs differ significantly from my own.
Exchange 6: Finding Common Ground

Our final exchange surprised me because of the nuance and disagreement that existed even within the students from Louisiana themselves. This conversation reinforced the idea that social media and political rhetoric often exaggerate division, while real conversations reveal much more complexity, humanity, and common ground.
